This is The Hermetic Tarot deck by Godfrey Dowson. This esoteric tarot deck is based upon the secret teachings of the Order of the Golden Dawn. Godrey Dowson's intricate black and white illustrations emphasize the Golden Dawn's astrological, Qabalistic, angelic, and numerical attributions. Dowson's detailed artwork highlights the powerful symbolism in both the Major and Minor Arcana. The tarot cards measure approximately 2 3/4" wide and 4 5/8" tall. A small instruction booklet is included in the box with the 78 card tarot deck. The booklet has a discussion of the cards and card meanings.
About the Deck: The suits in The Hermetic Tarot are: Wands (for fire), Swords (for air), Cups (for water) and Pentacles (for earth). The four court cards in the deck represent the Tetragrammaton or four part name of God: Yod, He, Vau, He. Each court card represents a single letter of the name. The court cards are: Knight, Queen, King & Princess. The elemental associations of the court cards are on the top of the card. The ordering of the Major Arcana follows the Golden Dawn system with Fortitude (Strength) as Trump VIII and Justice as Trump XI. Each of the 22 Major Arcana cards have the Hebrew letter associated with the Trump in the upper left hand corner while the rest of the symbolic associations are incorporated in the design of the card. Several Trumps have been renamed: the Fool is The Foolish Man, Strength is Fortitude, the Tower is The Blasted Tower, Judgement is The Last Judgement, and the World is the Universe. The Minor Arcana cards numbered 1 through 10 are attributions of the sephira on the Qabalistic Tree of Life, and the four numbered cards in each suit are ruled by the sephiroth with the same number (i.e. Tiphareth rules the four sixes and so on). The astrological attributes of the numbered or Pip cards are included in the design. Unlike the Rider-Waite deck, the Pip cards do not include illustrations. Both the Major and Minor Arcana cards have been given a title that reveals the essential nature of the card. The Hermetic Tarot is an outstanding tarot deck to use for meditation, pathworking and magickal study.
Purpose: Tarot cards are powerful tools that can be used for divination, spellcraft, pathworking, meditation and spiritual growth.
